Sunday we hit a milestone at Hudson, by breaking our way into the podium for the first time in 10 starts with a 2nd place finish. We started third and inched our way up front making a slick move inside the leader out of 2. Clearing him, we went on to lead the race for 4 laps before getting picked off low by a pinto. Running a good amount of green flag laps thereafter, the red flag flew. Happening right behind me, a car got picked off and cart wheeled down the back straight, off the track and through the tire wall. One lengthy cleanup later, some apparently intentional yellow flag contact (included in the on-board cam), and we were on our way. Knowing the restart probably put the 2 VW right on our tail, we knew hopes at a podium were gone once again. Then with 2 to go, a lapped car got involved with second and third, resulting in some aggressive contact opening the door for us to scoot on by and take 2nd place.
Monday we let Chris Garside drive the car in his first ever race at the tight quarter mile track. Slated to start 9th, there was lap 1 melee that took out our LR tire, as well as some cars stranded in the infield. After a pause on the track the car wouldn’t start (Later diagnosed as a pinched fuel line). We got him back out there with our all-star crew of Mitch, Beak, Renee, and a special appearance from Mater. Caution free for the remainder of the race, with a tight race car, Chris wheeled up to 5th making a bid for 4th when a couple lappers stopped green flag traffic and instead of having a path to 4th, 6th place passed us having us cross the line 6th.
Wacky Rainy Wednesday comes once a week, and after weather watching all day, the evening for racing was beautiful. Practice on the other hand, was not so beautiful. The car was tight for both rounds even after making several adjustments, and our tight car gremlin returned to us. But the problem was quickly resolved after a visual inspection of the car, and more adjustments were made (as featured on the Speedbowl’s Instagram). Starting 21st of 30, we were in the wrong line and went backwards. After one lone caution, and one should-have-been caution checking us all up in turn 2, we went a majority of the race under green flag condition. Passing people so often, whether it be lead lap or lap down cars, that sense of position was lost among all the cars. The toughest battle this week came with the 8 car. We looked high and low and couldn’t get that thing to wheel by him. We crossed the line 8th place, only to find out later that night that two of the top 5 got disqualified in post race tech, moving us up to 6th place. Fantastic racing by the entire X-Car squad again this week, can only hope it continues above and beyond!
Up next we race four-cylinder fury at the Bowl, where we will run our standard 20 lap event as well as the 50 lap NEMST race. Then following that, we’ll be at Seekonk for the Boston Louie Memorial event also with the NEMST.
Big thanks to our sponsors who will be on the car for this weekend!!
