To Da Front with Mitch – 5/1/14

To Da Front – 5/1/14

It was a wet and gloomy weekend at Stafford Speedways’ Spring “drizzler.”  We got our North East Mini Stock Tour race in front of the packed Sunday crowd where we came across the line 11th of the 21 that had returned after the rain.  Our teammate in the #12 Ford Tempo finished 15th.

Saturday we woke up to downpours and not a word of information from the track.  All we knew was that we were racing.  After extensive track drying, we finally were able to make it out for one round of practice.  We found that once again we couldn’t make the straight with the gearing in the car, and had to upshift.  We also found that our shifter issue was back even with a different transmission in the car.  Stuck in third gear, all we could do was bounce the rev limiter while trying to maintain speed down the straights.

In the time waiting for our heat race we tried checking numerous things over once again to see just what could have gone wrong.  We took the rev limiter out of the car as a last ditch effort, and that proved to fail as we still couldn’t do anything in the heat finishing last on the track.  Not looking forward to the feature, the rain came and gave us some time to formulate a plan.

Coming home that night, we found AutoZone to be open, and thankfully they had just the part we were looking for.  Bright and early Sunday morning, and $80 later, with the help from Bruce Clark we got the shift cables popped into place.  Not knowing the result of this fix until we hit the track, it was a rather stressful time leading up to the rain delayed start.

But it worked! Car shifted no problem, car handled halfway decent, and car didn’t break down.  We raced as hard as we could with what we had and only went one lap down.  A restart with 5 to go gave us a chance at 10th, so we pitted for an adjustment to see if we could pick up any speed, and we did reel in the car but didn’t have enough time, and finished 11th.

Up next:  Saturday we have an X-Car race at the Waterford Speedbowl, and Sunday we’ll be headed across the sound on a ferry to get to Riverhead Raceway for an Enduro event.
