THE BATTLE,THE 500 ,DANICA AND THE SHOW……WELL WE SURVIVED ANOTHER DAYTONA SPEEDWEEKS AND I MUST SAY THE 500 WAS A LITTLE DISSAPOINTING WITH “ A FOLLOW THE LEADER TYPE DEAL” GOING ON UNTIL THE LAST FEW LAPS…DALE MADE SOME MOVES TO GET TO THE FRONT AND MADE IT FUN TO WATCH…I GUESS THE DRIVERS JUST WEREN’T SURE HOW THE LOW LINE WOULD GO IF THEY VENTURED DOWN TO TRY AND PASS WITH THE NEW GEN 6 CARS…AND THE DAY BEFORE IN THE NATIONWIDE RACE, WHAT A RIDE KYLE LARSON TOOK, GETTING UP IN THE CATCH FENCE AND DEPOSITING PARTS IN THE STANDS.LETS HOPE ALL THE INJURED FANS RECOVER SOON.THE TRUCK RACE WAS CLOSE WITH A COUPLE OF BIG WRECKS TAKING OUT A GOOD NUMBER OF TOP TEAMS FRIDAY NIGHT BUT A CLOSE FINISH WAS GOOD.DANICA HAD A GOOD WEEK FOR SURE AND SHE MADE MANY PROUD OF HER RUN IN THE 500.WOODY PITKAT WAS THE NEW SYMRNA MOD CHAMP WITH ROOKIE JOEY “MOOCH” FROM THE NEMA LITE AND INEX LEGEND SERIES WINNING A PRO LATE MODEL FEATURE THAT WEEK AS WELL AT NEW SYMRNA,IT WOULD BE GOOD TO SEE HIM RACE A LATE MODEL IN OUR AREA,HE HAS THE TALENT TO RACE ANYTHING AND WIN. I WAS TOLD VOLUSIA COUNTY SPEEDWAY HAD BIG CROWDS AND GOOD RACING FOR THE WEEK AS WELL.THE BIG NEWS FOR US SHORT-TRACKERS WAS THE BATTLE ON THE BEACH WITH SOME OF OUR OWN HOME TOWN AND HOME TRACK DRIVERS RACING IN NWAAS LATE MODELS,NWMT MODIFIEDS AND K & N SERIES CARS MONDAY AND TUESDAY AT THE DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY.IT WAS PRIME TIME AND A LONG TIME COMING AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED….SOME OF THE BEST RACING COMES FROM THE SHORT TRACKS ACROSS OUR GREAT NATION AND ALL THE TOP CARS WERE IN DAYTONA TO RACE ON A TIGHT 4/10 MILE FLAT TRACK ( AKA THE BACKSTRETCH).IT TOOK ME LESS THAN A LAP TO WATCH MONDAY NIGHTS NWAAS LATE MODEL 150 TO SENSE THAT SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT…FOR STARTERS THE TRACK WAS FLAT AND THE FRONTSTRETCH AND BACKSTRETCH WERE LONG MAKING THE FIRST LAP LIKE A ENDURO/DEMO DERBY WITH TOO MANY CARS LOOKING FOR THE SAME PIECE OF “REAL ESTATE” GOING INTO TURN ONE OR THREE AND ON EVERY RESTART.NO TRUE INFIELD MADE IT TOUGH TO RACE BETWEEN THE LINES AS WELL.ONCE THE CARS GOT A FEW LAPS IN IT WAS STILL AN ISSUE AND HARD TO PASS WITHOUT TAKING SOMEONE OUT AND THE LAST LAP DUMPING OF C.E.FAULK LEFT A BAD TASTE FOR MANY.TUESDAY WAS COOL TO SEE ALL THE MODIFIEDS UP CLOSE AND ON SPEED PRIMETIME FOR THE 150 LAP MAIN EVENT BUT THAT RACE TOO WAS NOT A GOOD ONE AT ALL WITH 17 OR 18 CAUTION FLAGS AND AGAIN A LAST LAP SPIN BY THE LEADER GAVE WAY TO THE SECOND PLACE CAR PICKING UP THE WIN AND A LOT OF FINGER POINTING ALONG WITH IT.WHY THEY HAD TO INTERVIEW MIKE STEFANIK AFTER HE ASKED THEM NOT TO IS BEYOND ME.I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF TOUGH INTERVIEWS IN THE SPEEDBOWL PIT AREA WITH T.C. AND A ROCK THROUGH HIS RADIATOR (AT A VMRS EVENT WHILE LEADING),HARRY RHEAUMES HUGE WRECK (WORST SK/MOD WRECK I EVER WITNESSED AT THE BOWL) ALONG WITH TODD SZEGEDY AFTER WRECKING HARD AND EARLY IN THE MR.ROOTER 161 AND EVEN VERN ROMANOSKI DESTROYING HIS CAR AND ALMOST LEAVING THE BUILDING OVER THE BACKSTRETCH WALL IN A ISMA WRECK,AND TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH,WITH THE LOOK ON MIKES FACE, I WOULD HAVE AVOIDED THAT MESS AND LEFT HIM ALONE . OH WELL THAT’S WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE AND LETS HOPE IF THE RACES ARE RUN NEXT YEAR AT DAYTONA THEY CAN COME UP WITH A BETTER TRACK FOR OUR GUYS TO SHOW THERE STUFF.RACE-A-RAMA IS IN THE BOOKS AND WE ARE ONLY A MONTH AWAY FROM RACING AT THE SPEEDBOWL WITH A HUGE SHOW PLANNED FOR APRIL 5TH -6TH – 7TH BUD BLASTOFF. BACK IN 1992 WHEN I RETURNED TO NEW ENGLAND AFTER LIVING IN FLORIDA FOR OVER 20 YEARS THE FIRST EVENT I WENT TO WAS RACE- A –RAMA AND IT WAS AWESOME WITH THREE BUILDINGS OF RACE CARS,VENDORS AND EVEN TQ AND GO KART RACING.IT HAS CHANGED WITH MANY TRACKS NOT PARTICIPATING ANY LONGER,I KNOW WHIP CITY AND RIVERSIDE PARK ARE GONE BUT I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE SEEN MORE STOCK CARS AND TRACKS GET INVOLVED ,I GUESS WHEN YOU TEAM UP WITH A CUSTOM CAR SHOW THAT IS THE RESULT…I DID SEE SOME WILD LOOKING CARS AND BIKES THAT IS FOR SURE. IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE THE RACING SEASON GETTING CLOSER AND WE HAD A GOOD RADIO SHOW FROM RACE-A-RAMA ON SATURDAY…IT IS WOMAN IN MOTORSPORTS NEXT SATURDAY ON OVERDRIVE,3 PM..JOHN GATES.
