The Great Pumkin 178…

The way I see it…

Sandy hit our area hard with power outages and damage everywhere…storms seem to be coming at us more frequently than in the past and we hope you and your family stayed safe and sound. The Great Pumpkin 178 closed out our racing season @ the Waterford Speed bowl on Saturday afternoon October 27th and treated the fans with some great side by side action on the fast .375 mile paved oval. Jeff Rocco raced to his first NWAAS SK modified feature win of his career with a fine run in the # 57 car with Todd Ceravolo in the # 16 taking home second coming all the way from the back of the pack. Shawn Monahan had the # 78 modified running strong and put down a fine third place run to end the season. Congrats to the # 27 team and driver Tyler Chadwick as he won the SK modified point championship over # 71 Jeff Pearl to become the divisions youngest champion…a lot of hard work from his crew, including his dad, went into that car all season long and a top notch driver like Tyler made all the right moves to win the title. Good season ending runs for Nichole Morgillo, Brent Sweet, Ed Puleo and John Montesanto all in the top ten….The Late Models clicked off 50 laps without any cautions as Bruce Thomas Jr. put the # 35 to the point early and never looked back. The defending LM champion Jeff Smith # 15 finished a distant second with our 2012 LM champion Dillon Moltz in the # 28 Mark Cooper AAA Camry third. A nice field of 18 cars took the green flag with good runs for Rich Staskowski and 2012 ACT national champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. down from N.H.……Moltz had a great season and put down some fine runs all the way to the championship. The street stocks were a bit rough from the” git go” with several caution flags for just about everything you could muster up in 50 laps. When the dust settled Walt Hovey Jr. # 16 was both the feature winner and the well deserved champion. Corey Hutchings, Chris Meyer, Ted Dupre and Al Stone rounded out the top five. The mighty mini stocks had 28 laps to race and were clean until the white flag came out and bunched up the field for a thrilling green white checker finish. Ken Cassidy Jr. in his # 11 won his 12th feature of the year by a whisker over Ray Christian in the # 37 car. Jeff Cembruch, Glen Colvin and Ian Brew were the top five finishers in a frantic last lap dash for the glory… Cassidy Jr. won both the track championship and a NASCAR championship in his cool looking # 11 mustang. It was a very good year at the Bowl with so many close races and a very competitive field of cars plus a schedule that had a little something for all to enjoy and I think most had a good time every Saturday night. I believe the NWMT Mr. Rooter 161 was a great addition and a lot of fans saw the close in your face action that we enjoy weekly lap after lap and will be return customers next season.I also liked that the Speedbowl closed out the racing season in southern new england,I am just saying that hey “if we open it why not close it”. I was fooled as to thinking we were New England’s final 2012 racing event! It came down to a tie as Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H. also had a make- up event with the Granite State Pro Stock tour and weekly divisions in action on the same day as our Great Pumpkin 178(Barry Gray was the pro stock 100 lap winner). Also enduro racing on November 3 at Riverside,N.H.Speedway may get this years “latest 2012 new england race event award”. Other events still to go this year include racing at the Caraway, N.C. Speedway as they play host to the North-South Shootout for Tour modified and sk’s ,PASS Super LM’s and more on November 8th thru the 10th with many northeast teams heading down to compete. Dirt track fans that weekend can check out Bridgeport, N.J. Speedway for 2 big days of modified racing Nov.9th and 10th as well. Wall Stadium in Belmar, N.J. will again play host to the Turkey Derby Nov.23-24th with many divisions in action including 150 laps for tour modifieds (that area took a hard hit from Sandy so check the web). One race I would like to check out is Pensacola,Fla.’s “Snowball Derby” the first weekend in December…just thinkin’outloud. With 2012 behind us it will be interesting to check out the websites and listen to overdrive for 2013 happenings.
